Sneads Ferry, NC – The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department’s Dixon Youth Baseball / Softball District will hold an officer election meeting on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Stump Sound Park (1771 Hwy 172, Sneads Ferry) at 7pm. Columbia, SC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs swept the Columbia Blowfish in a doubleheader on Sunday night, improving their season record to 16-8 and 3-0 against the Blowfish on the year. The Dogs took the first game of the twin bill, 3-2, behind a strong pitching performance by Dan Smith (Monmouth) and some timely hitting. Sal Giardina (Lynn) ripped a base hit to plate Zach Gawrych (Tampa) in the first inning, as Gawrych extended his league-leading run total to 23 on the season. RALEIGH, NC – The National Hockey League today announced the 2012-13 regular-season schedules for its 30 member clubs. The Carolina Hurricanes will open the season with a six-game road trip beginning on Oct. 13 at Winnipeg, prior to their home opener at PNC Arena on Friday, Oct. 26, against the New York Rangers. MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (9-16) and Edenton Steamers (16-7) split a double-header Sunday evening at Big Rock Stadium, as the Marlins took game one by a score of 4-3 before the Steamers came back to win game two 8-2. In game one, the Marlins fell behind the Steamers 2-0 in the top of the first but came back quickly. MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (8-15) erased a five-run deficit with a five-run fifth inning and defeated the Petersburg Generals (10-12) 6-5 in 10 innings on Sal Annunziata’s walk-off double Saturday night at Big Rock Stadium. RALEIGH, NC – The Carolina Hurricanes today completed their activities at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA, by selecting nine players in rounds 2-7. Carolina selected five forwards, two defensemen and two goaltenders on the draft’s second day after having traded the eighth overall pick to Pittsburgh on Friday in the deal that brought center Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes. Carolina used its first of two second-round picks (38th overall) to select left wing Phil Di Giuseppe (5’11”, 197 lbs.) from the University of Michigan. The five-time SoCon champion CofC women’s tennis team had three of its own represented on the list in senior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.). EDENTON N.C. – The game between the Morehead City Marlins and Edenton Steamers scheduled for June 22 has been rained out and the game will not be made up. The game marked the last scheduled meeting between the two teams at Edenton this half of the season, and because of scheduling conflicts will not be made up.
