Jan. 14, 2012 – The East Carolina track and field program continued its indoor campaign by setting two school records and posting numerous solid finishes at the Virginia Tech Invitational inside the Rector Fieldhouse. In total, the Pirates racked up 35 top-10 results and won four event titles – split evenly between the men and women’s teams. Coples, Powell, Brown & Jones to represent UNC in Mobile Mobile, AL. (Jan. 15)—North Carolina will send an ACC-best four players to the 2012 Senior Bowl. Defensive end Quinton Coples, defensive tackle Tydreke Powell, linebacker Zach Brown and wide receiver Dwight Jones have all officially accepted invites to the 2012 game, it was announced today. The senior showcase event is set for 3pm (CT) on Saturday, January 28th in Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Wilmington, NC – The Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League (CPL) announced they have signed three players from their 2011 ball club that advanced to the second round of the CPL Playoffs.  Infielders: Alex Freedman, Justyn Carter, and Jake Mayers. Freedman a redshirt freshman returns to Wilmington this summer, marking his second season of collegiate summer baseball.  In 2011 with the Sharks, Freedman started all 52 games, hitting for an average of .280.  Freedman was fourth on the team with seven doubles, while driving in 23 runs on the season. RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has activated forward Jeff Skinner from injured reserve. Skinner, who has missed Carolina’s last 16 games with a concussion, is eligible to play in tonight’s game against the Capitals in Washington. Skinner, 19, currently ranks second among Hurricanes skaters in goals (12) and third in points (24). Prior to suffering a concussion against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 7, the Markham, Ont., native had not missed a game in his NHL career. Erskine Bowles Honored for Service to North Carolina Higher Education

CHAPEL HILL – UNC President Emeritus Erskine B. Bowles is the 2011 recipient of the University Award, the highest honor given by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina. UNC President Tom Ross and Board Chair Hannah Gage of Wilmington presented the award, which recognizes illustrious service to higher education in North Carolina, during a banquet Thursday evening (Jan. 12) on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The award acknowledges the extraordinary leadership of Bowles, who retired in December 2010 after five years as the University’s chief administrator.
