NC Marine Debris Symposium News: Fall 2014

Marine debris is a problem that continues to grow.  Our waterways and oceans are constantly polluted with a wide variety of marine debris ranging from polystyrene trays and plastic bags to derelict fishing equipment and abandoned boats. Marine life, such as several Fish species, Whales, Sharks, Sea Turtles, and Birds have been known to ingest marine debris or become entangled in marine debris, which may lead to injury, intestinal blockage, and death.  Marine debris is an Eastern North Carolina concern not only because of the threats to our native wildlife, our ecosystem and our own health, but it also washes up on beaches and shorelines degrading the environment, and effecting our local economy and tourism. New Hanover residents near Brunswick Nuclear Plant to receive KI tablets

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC Nov. 3, 2014 – New Hanover County public health officials will provide free potassium iodide, or KI, tablets to New Hanover County residents who live within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) of the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant this week. The new KI tablets will be distributed beginning Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Carolina Beach Town Hall, located at 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Residents are reminded that following this special distribution event, the health department will continue to make KI available at no charge to EPZ residents at the health department during normal business hours. BOLIVIA, NC Nov. 3, 2014 – Money and artistic outlets; two things schools constantly need. On November 15th, students in Brunswick County will get the chance to showcase their musical and artistic talents in a non-traditional way while raising money for prom. Only for a Limited Time Aug. 2-Sept. 13 WINNABOW, NC July 17, 2014 – A cannon ball, window glass and gold dust from the wreck of Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR), will be on exhibit at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site from Aug. 2 to Sept. 13. A ribbon cutting will open the exhibit and will feature a talk about artifacts recovered from the shipwreck by QAR Project Director Billy Ray Morris.
