Colton Leighton preparing to record and release his first EP, “Reconstruction.”

He is a 23 year old just like most others with one exception.  He likes videogames, football and WWE Wrestling.  His favorite team is the Carolina Panthers and his favorite wrestlers are Daniel Bryan and Shawn Michaels.  The exception is that he is one of the few talented musicians in the area who will be releasing an album soon. Colton Leighton is a name that you should probably get used to hearing if you like live music and live in southeastern North Carolina.  He is a phenomenal talent that hails from Jacksonville and has been performing for the last two years, locally.  On the strength of a Youtube video of one of his songs, “Piece of You”, which got more […]

Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital News (Oct. 6, 2013)

New road to hospital now open! The Town of Surf City has graciously allowed us to use Community Center Dr. to access our facility while Tortuga Lane was under construction. Tortuga Lane is now open! With the opening of the new road the town has requested that we direct all our staff and visitors to begin using Tortuga Lane to get to our new hospital. Luckily for us the connecting road to Tortuga, Charlie Medlin Road, has an easily identifiable landmark right next to it. Make the turn from Rts. 50/210 onto Charlie Medlin, which is next to the Shipwreck Point (Mini) Golf course. Follow the gravel road and the directional signs through the roundabout. Our hospital is the big […]

Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital (Sept. 30, 2013)

Surf City, NC – September 30, 2013 – First of all, many thanks to all of you for sticking with us as we work our carapaces off completing the move to the new facility. We have gradually been transporting our smaller patients from our Topsail Beach location to their new home in Surf City. And all new admits go directly there, usually into our ICU. The wrench thrown into the gears on a smooth transition continues to be the water system, or systems. We have three separate systems at the new hospital: two small systems and the big mama, that main one that will keep the patients in our 60 x 60 sea turtle bay in toasty comfort. The two […]

And last but certainly not least… Karina Monroe This is not Karina’s first time at the rodeo, so to speak. This 2013 graduate of Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC cut her sea turtle teeth in Costa Rica. In 2005 Karina, who has “always loved sea turtles” spent time at a sea turtle reserve, working mainly on the beaches, patrolling for nesting mothers and hatchlings and protecting them from poachers. Costa Rica is a dangerous place for self-proclaimed sea turtle devotees, and you would be right in guessing that this is a lady willing to take a stand for what she believes in. Karina found out about us on-line and was intrigued. She was not exposed to any sort of rehabilitation […]

Surf City, NC on Topsail Island July 22, 2013: Amber Wenrich   Amber, a native of Selinsgrove, PA has been vacationing with her family on Topsail for years. And for every one of those years she’s snaked her way through the long lines at our gate with hundreds of other visitors. She remembers when “Lennie,” our resident Kemps, and long-time Loggerhead patient “Boater” were about half the size they are today. Now she happily notes that: “I’m working on the inside with the turtles instead of waiting outside to see them!” Amber kept up with hospital news on-line, and was especially affected by the story on our Director, Jean Beasley when she was named Animal Planet’s Hero of the Year. […]

Topsail Island, NC April 15, 2013: “Day is Done” Betsy Kautz, longtime hospital and Topsail Turtle Project volunteer who died in 2012 returned home last week to finally be laid to rest. Her family and friends from around the country joined together with her turtle hospital “family” at our new facility, on a very rainy Friday afternoon, to prepare Betsy for her final journey. In a few days she would be reunited with an old friend, “Dare” not far from where they both spent many hours over many years. When our beloved Kemp’s Ridley, “Dare” died in 2005 we partnered with Eternal Reefs to fulfill a promise that we made when she was admitted to our hospital in 1999: she […]

Topsail Island, NC March 29, 2013: Spring break? ‘Tis the season, even though you couldn’t tell it by the weather around here, for spring break. While that may mean traveling for some fun in the sun for many students there are others who made very different plans for spending their time off. Luckily for us we had that second group: a dozen students (and their two program advisors) from the Integrated Life Sciences Honors Program at the University of Maryland who trekked down to help us out at the hospital for an entire week. After a long winter tending to fifty-eight patients our volunteers are definitely showing signs of wear and tear. So when these energetic and strong freshmen and […]
