CHARLESTON, S.C. – The fourth-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team placed third at the Moody Trophy hosted by the University of Rhode Island over the weekend in Kingston, R.I. Eight races were completed in each division on Saturday, but there was no wind to complete sailing on Sunday. The Cougars scored 91 points behind Stanford (61) and Brown (79) in first and second respectively in the 19-team field. It was an improvement for CofC after finishing seventh at the intersectional regatta two years ago. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – College of Charleston women’s tennis player Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) reached the semifinals and placed third in the top singles flight at the three-day Wake Forest Invitational held on Oct. 5-7 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. Newman, a senior and the Cougars’ top returner on the squad, defeated Audrey Wooland of West Virginia, 6-4, 6-2, and Alex Whitehead of UNCG, 6-2, 6-3, in straight sets in the first two tournament rounds, but fell to Antonia Kolovou by a count of 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals. CHARLESTON, S.C. -The Furman Paladins battled their way to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20) win over College of Charleston in SoCon volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena. Furman (15-5, 4-2) used a late run in the first set and overpowering defense in the second set to build a 2-0 set lead at the break. College of Charleston (13-6, 5-1) fought hard in the third set to pull out a close win, but the Paladins reloaded for the fourth set and took advantage of a late 6-0 run to turn an 18-14 deficit into a 20-18 lead. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s basketball team will begin official practice Monday Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m. at TD Arena. The practice is scheduled to be held in the practice gym and go from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The Cougars have been doing individual workouts on the basketball court, lifting weights, playing pickup games and conditioning exercises. Their workouts have included weekly Monday morning workouts at 6:00 a.m. and have presented such challenges as carrying a 100 pound weight a mile, running in and out of water at the beach and crawling through sand, carrying teammates up five floors of a parking garage and running together with a rope attached to the team across the Arthur […]

Cougars Golf Remains 13th After Second Round of Brickyard Collegiate Championship

MACON, Ga. – The College of Charleston men’s golf team improved on their first round score by five shots, but are still in 13th place heading into the final round of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship. The Cougars shot an 8-over 296 bringing them to 21-over for the tournament and eight shots back of the top 10 on the team leaderboard. Georgia continues to lead the tournament as they shot even par today and are 8-under overall. Freshman Daniel Kim and senior Neil Gowan each shot 1-over 73s to lead the Cougars. CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior Darcy Dorton had a dominating performance to lead College of Charleston to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-20) sweep over Wofford at TD Arena on Saturday afternoon. A native of Muncie, Ind., Dorton made 17 kills for a .394 attack percentage, marking a new career high in kills for a three-set match.
