CofC Women Claim SAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championship

MIAMI – The 12th-ranked College of Charleston women’s sailing team claimed an 18-point victory over host Miami (Fla.) to win the SAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championship after a great day of sailing on Biscayne Bay on Sunday. Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore skipper Kayla Gibson (Houston, Texas), who combined with senior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), for five top 3 finishes over the course of eight races to place first in A-Division with 25 points. Sophomore skipper Melany Johnson (Berwyn, Pa.) and junior crew Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) also placed first with 24 points in B-Division. Cougar Women’s Golf Finish Fourth in Penn State Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. –  The College of Charleston women’s golf team had each counted score at 2-over or better as they moved up and finished in fourth-place at the Penn State Invitational Sunday. The Cougars shot the fourth best third round in the tournament field and their best single round of the tournament at 6-over 294. Host Penn State dominated the tournament from early on and won with a 2-under 862 combined score. CofC Equestrian Champions Opening Show of Season

  STATESBORO, Ga. – The College of Charleston equestrian team opened the 2012-13 season with a first-place finish at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) show at Evermore Farm hosted by Georgia Southern. CofC collected eight first-place ribbons highlighted by sophomore Eliza Hay’s two best-in-show performances. Hay championed the Open Fences (Section A) and Open Flat (Section B) and was the high-point rider of the day. Other best-in-show performances for CofC included Zoe Merritt, Maddie Gordon, Trudy Noll, Audrey Kallman, Tina McNerney and Laura Smith. CofC now leads the newly-realigned IHSA Zone 5 Region 3 by three points over second-place-finishing South Carolina. MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – No. 1 Maryland required a late goal to escape with a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston men’s soccer team in front of 2,230 fans at Patriots Point on Saturday night. The Cougars held the lead on two separate occasions but Maryland’s two second-half goals were the difference in the match. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Senior Vanessa Koechli shot a 2-under 70 to lead the College of Charleston women’s golf team as the Cougars are in fifth-place after the second round Saturday in State College. Second Round Results The Cougars shot a 9-over 297 combined score for the round, in which host Penn State separated themselves from the field with a 5-under round. The Nittany Lions (-1) hold a 20 shot lead over the second-place team Old Dominion (+19). Cougars Sweep Georgia Southern In Battle Of Unbeaten Teams

STATESBORO, Ga. -College of Charleston celebrated a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) on the road at Georgia Southern in a battle of the two unbeaten teams in the SoCon South Division. The Cougars (10-5, 3-0) beat Georgia Southern (12-6, 3-1) in three sets at Hanner Fieldhouse for the first time since 2008 in a highly competitive series history. The sweep also marks the third-straight SoCon sweep for CofC, all coming on the road. College of Charleston hit .279 and held the Eagles to .142 hitting, as the Cougars only made 14 errors and Georgia Southern made 27. GREENSBORO, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s soccer team suffered its first Southern Conference loss on Friday night when the Cougars fell, 2-1, in overtime to UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Cougars (3-7-0, 2-1-0 SoCon) were narrowly outshot in a contest dictated by great goalkeeping on both ends. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The College of Charleston men’s and women’s cross country teams competed on a hot day in Charlotte as the women finished 19th and the men 23rd in the 2012 Charlotte Cross Country Invitational. Sophomore Hayley McMahon led the women’s team in their first 6K race on the season as she finished 77th in 23:21.24, three seconds from the 10th best time in school history. Freshman Emily Sanders was the second College of Charleston women’s runner to finish the race as she crossed the line in 87th place in 23:30.65. Cougar Women’s Golf Tied for Fourth After First Round of Nittany Lion Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Led by seniors Vanessa Koechli and Katharina Boehm and freshman Julia Neumann who each finished the day in the top 10 individually, the College of Charleston women’s golf team is tied for fourth-place after the opening round of the Nittany Lion Women’s Invitational Friday in State College. The Cougars were one of three teams that shot a 16-over 304 team score in the first round. Host Penn State leads the tournament after an opening round of 292 (+4), Old Dominion (+8) is in second-place and Harvard (+15) is third on the team leaderboard.
