Newman, Baker To Compete at Wake Forest Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women’s tennis players Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) will compete individually at the Wake Forest Invitational to be held on Oct. 5-7 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C. Along with the Cougars and host Demon Deacons, 14 other teams make up this year’s singles and doubles tournament field including Richmond, UNC Charlotte, Campbell, Louisville, Navy, Radford, West Virginia, Winthrop, Stetson and East Tennessee State as well as Southern Conference foes UNCG, Appalachian State, Elon and Davidson. College of Charleston Outlasts Coastal Carolina, 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston outlasted Coastal Carolina, 3-1 (26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23), in non-conference volleyball action at TD Arena on Tuesday night. The Cougars (12-5, 4-0) won their sixth straight match despite only hitting .189 with 24 attacking errors. Coastal Carolina (5-9, 3-1) could not overcome 12 service errors as the squad surrendered late leads in both the first and fourth sets. The Chanticleers ultimately made more kills (57-52) and blocks (9-6) than the Cougars, but strong CofC efforts at the end of sets proved to be the difference. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s basketball team has been conducting preseason workouts for a month and CofCSports.com caught up with seniors Cathryn Hardy, Latisha Harris and Megan Fischer to get their thoughts on how things are going. The Cougars have been doing individual workouts on the basketball court, lifting weights, playing pickup games and conditioning exercises. Their workouts have included weekly Monday morning workouts at 6:00 a.m. and have presented such challenges as carrying a 100 pound weight a mile, running in and out of water at the beach and crawling through sand, carrying teammates up five floors of a parking garage and running together with a rope attached to the team across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston junior setter Taeler Daviswas tabbed the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Davis helped lead the Cougars to a 3-0 week with road sweeps at Citadel, Georgia Southern and Davidson. A native of Phelan, Calif., she averaged 11.89 assists per set with a .402 set percentage. She also converted five kills on dump attempts and was a part of eight total blocks, including a big solo block at Davidson. Since taking over as the starting setter against Georgetown (Sept. 14), Davis has averaged 11.79 assists per set. Charleston, SC – Researchers at the College of Charleston and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have recently completed a study concerning the fate of a newly discovered gas cloud that soon will be devoured by a supermassive black hole that resides at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The gas cloud, known as G2, is expected to pass within 40 billion kilometers (270 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun) of the black hole named Sgr A* in June of next year. This work helps to provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the disruption of a gas cloud by the intense gravitational forces of a black hole. CHARLESTON, S.C.- College of Charleston (11-5, 4-0) volleyball will return home to face Big South opponent Coastal Carolina (5-8, 3-1) in a mid-week match on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.The Cougars return after a five-match road trip that saw CofC go 5-0 and 15-1 in sets, sweeping the first four SoCon matches of the season at Elon, Citadel, Georgia Southern and Davidson. College of Charleston has averaged 15.2 kills per set against SoCon opponents and a hitting average of .293, holding opponents to .113. The Cougars outshot the Phoenix but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. DAVIDSON, N.C. – College of Charleston remained unbeaten in SoCon play with the squad’s fourth straight road sweep, defeating Davidson 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars (11-5, 4-0) captured their fourth consecutive SoCon road sweep for the first time since 2005 while Davidson fell to 6-8 and 2-2 in SoCon play. College of Charleston made the sweep despite some inconsistent play on the court. CofC hit just .237 and made a season-high nine service errors. MIAMI – The 12th-ranked College of Charleston women’s sailing team claimed an 18-point victory over host Miami (Fla.) to win the SAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championship after a great day of sailing on Biscayne Bay on Sunday. Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore skipper Kayla Gibson (Houston, Texas), who combined with senior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), for five top 3 finishes over the course of eight races to place first in A-Division with 25 points. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. –  The College of Charleston women’s golf team had each counted score at 2-over or better as they moved up and finished in fourth-place at the Penn State Invitational Sunday. The Cougars shot the fourth best third round in the tournament field and their best single round of the tournament at 6-over 294. Host Penn State dominated the tournament from early on and won with a 2-under 862 combined score.
