CHARLESTON, S.C. – Joe Wallace has been hired as Director of Basketball Operations and completes CofC Men’s Basketball Head Coach Doug Wojcik’s staff on Thursday. Wallace previously spent the last six years at the University of Tulsa under Wojcik, the last three seasons as Director of Basketball Operations for the Golden Hurricane coordinating all video operations, scouting and team travel as well as monitoring academic progress and facility improvement. He was promoted from graduate manager in 2009, where he served as director of player development working with current NBA players Ben Uzoh and Jerome Jordan. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 2-ranked College of Charleston sailing team closed out the 2011-12 season with a fourth-place finish at the three-day ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship hosted by the University of Texas Sailing Team and the Austin Yacht Club on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas. It marked the Cougars’ highest finish since winning the 18-team coed regatta in 2007. They previously placed seventh in 2011 and ninth in 2010. Junior skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) led the way by earning his second career All-American nod. He was also one of the top 4 finalists for the Everett B. Morris Trophy, which is awarded annually to the College Sailor of the Year. CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former College of Charleston standout and current N.Y. Yankee outfielder Brett Gardner will be playing with the Charleston RiverDogs this weekend as he rehabilitates a strained right elbow. Gardner was drafted by the Yankees in the third round in 2005, the highest draft pick in CofC baseball history. He finished his CofC career with a .368 batting average, 141 RBI, 16 triples and a school-record 97 stolen bases. Gardner famously joined the Cougars as a walk-on, but his natural speed and fierce determination made him one of the best players in program history. CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior right-handed reliever Kyle Owings has signed as a free agent with the Arizona Diamondbacks at the conclusion of the 2012 MLB Entry Draft. A native of Gilbert, S.C., Owings was named All-SoCon Second Team after completing his senior campaign with a 3-0 record and 1.73 ERA. He made two saves and struck out 52 batters while only walking 20 in 41.2 innings of work. No Cougar players were drafted in the second day of the MLB Draft after Marty Gantt (7th, Rays), Christian Powell (8th, Twins) and David Peterson (8th, Braves) were all drafted in the top eight rounds yesterday. Senior CF Marty Gantt (North Augusta, S.C.) was picked in the seventh round (242 overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays.
