Charleston, SC – The Charleston Battery heads to Pittsburgh PA Thursday for a 7 PM USL PRO match versus the Riverhounds.  The Battery continues the road trip on Saturday night for an 8 PM match versus the Dayton Dutch Lions.  Both games are available locally on 1340 AM as well as match at Dayton will be live on www.uslnation.com with the pre-game broadcast starting 15 minutes before kick off.   The Battery enters the game on the back of a 3-0 loss to Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls in a third round Open Cup game played on Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium.   Charleston’s last USL PRO game was a 1-0 win over the LA Blues.  The Battery […]

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The College of Charleston (37-20) will play in its fifth NCAA regional in nine years as the third-seeded Cougars face second-seeded #24 Georgia Tech (36-24) on Friday, June 1, at 1 p.m. in the first game of the 2012 Gainesville Regional in Gainesville, Fla. On the other side of the regional bracket is the nation’s overall top seed in #1 Florida (42-18) and MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman (34-25). CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston Assistant Dock Master Jacob Raymond has been named U.S. Sailing Sailor of the Week.   A former soldier in the U.S. Army National Guard, Raymond and the sport of sailing found each other not long ago and they’ve been giving back to each other ever since. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007-08 in East Baghdad, Iraq. Raymond was involved in a mission to work with the Iraqi Police Department patrolling the streets, searching houses and setting up road checkpoints. He also assisted in the relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.   Following his time in the National Guard, Raymond had been living off savings from his deployment in Iraq, while […]

Battery falls to NY Red Bulls in Open Cup

Charleston, S.C.  The Charleston Battery fell to MLS’s New York Red Bulls in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup by a score of three goals to none on Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,527 fans.  The Red Bulls and MLS leading goal scorer Kenny Cooper scored early to give New York an edge over the Battery.  Heath Pearce and Connor Lade also tallied as the Red Bulls advance.   Kenny Cooper opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Cooper received a ball with his back to Charleston goalkeeper, Brock Duckworth.  He was able to turn and rip a quick one-time finish to the lower left corner of the net to give NY the early lead. Smith Concludes Season at NCAA Regional

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C.) wrapped up her season as she competed in the high jump at the NCAA East Prelim Friday. Smith, who won the indoor and outdoor titles in the high jump at the Southern Conference Championships finished 39th in the competition with a clearance of 1.67 meters (5.47 feet). Smith cleared the opening height on her first attempt, but could not clear the next height of 1.72 meters. The winning height was 1.81 meters. “It was wonderful being here these last few days,” Smith said. “I always enjoy the competition and if you’re going to be the best you have to compete with the best.” Smith also talked about her last year on […]
