Great pitching and some stellar defense leads to victory SAVANNAH, GA – Ali Castillo drove in two runs and made a number of nice plays defensively for Charleston, and the pitching was fantastic in a 3-2 RiverDogs win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Independence Day at Historic Grayson Stadium. There were 4,180 on hand to see some great defense and timely hitting by Charleston. Savannah is now 4-10 in the second half (45-36 overall) while the RiverDogs advance to 9-5 with the win (48-33 overall). Denny McLain MLB’s Last 30-Game Winner to Appear at Riley Park

CHARLESTON, SC – Denny McLain, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who is the Major League’s last 30-game winner, will appear at the Charleston RiverDogs-Asheville Tourists game on July 11 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. He will sign copies of his 2007 autobiography, “I Told You I Wasn’t Perfect,” and will also throw the ceremonial first pitch, which is slated for 7:05 pm. McLain pitched for the Detroit Tigers (1963-70), Washington Senators (1971), Oakland A’s (1972) and the Atlanta Braves (1972) and fashioned a career 131-91 record with a 3.39 ERA and 1,282 strikeouts. OMAHA, Neb. – College of Charleston rising junior Daniel Aldrich could not defend his title in the 2012 TD Ameritrade Home Run Derby, failing to hit a home run in the first round of the competition in TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series. Aldrich entered the event as the defending title-holder after hitting 14 home runs in last year’s Derby, including four in the final round to defeat Georgia Southern’s Victor Roache. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston had 188 student-athletes named to the Southern Conference (SoCon) Academic Honor Roll for the 2011-12 academic year, the conference office announced Monday. Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll 2011-2012 (PDF) College of Charleston increased the number of student-athletes on the Honor Roll yet again this year, joining five other member institutions that also raised the number of honorees for this academic year. CHARLESTON, SC- Former LSU pitcher and recent sixth round draft pick of the New York Yankees, pitcher Nick Goody has joined the Charleston RiverDogs. He was promoted from the Staten Island Yankees, where he began his pro career after being drafted by the Yankees in June.Goody pitched in three games with the SI Yankees and allowed only one hit and one walk in 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and one save. He spent this previous college baseball season as a member of the bullpen at Louisiana State University and functioned as the team’s closer. In 35 games, he was 1-2 with a 2.67 ERA and 11 saves.
