Abdur-Rahim Named Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Amir Abdur-Rahim (pronounced UH-mere ab-durr-RA-heem) has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at the College of Charleston as announced by head coach Doug Wojcik on Thursday.   Abdur-Rahim, 31, will serve as the Cougars’ recruiting coordinator with strong regional ties in the Georgia and Atlanta areas and the Carolinas. He comes to CofC after spending the 2011-12 season as director of player development under head coach Brian Gregory at Georgia Tech.   “Amir is a multi-skilled and talented assistant coach,” Wojcik said. “He is very intelligent, articulate and is a great teacher. Cougar Hitting Comes Alive For 11-6 Win Over UNC Asheville

PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston bats came alive on the final game of the series, carrying CofC to an 11-6 win over UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon.   The Cougars hit three home runs and three doubles as all but one starter tallied a hit. The win snapped a two-game losing streak and helped the Cougars (34-17) avoid a sweep against the Bulldogs (24-25).   CofC was led by home runs from Marty Gantt, Bradley Goodson and Brandon Glazer. PLEASANT, S.C. – UNC Asheville scored four runs in the second inning and went on to win 8-4 on Saturday evening at Patriots Point.   Bulldog starter Ryan Dull (5-4) went 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out seven batters to earn the victory. Elliot Criss came on in relief to pitch the final two innings, allowing one run.   College of Charleston starter Josh Renfro (6-6) allowed six runs, only two earned, in 3.2 innings pitched. Charleston, SC – The Charleston Battery lost 1-0 to the Rochester Rhinos Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,819. Rhinos midfielder Danny Earls scored the lone goal in the 61st minute to lift Rochester to victory. The Battery enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the game and forced goalkeeper Kristian Nicht to make ten saves but could not find the back of the net. Cougars claim runner-up finish after spirited four-game push into finals BOONE, N.C. – The College of Charleston softball team fell, 6-2, to Georgia Southern in the second half of a two-game Southern Conference Championship at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars strung together four must-have wins including one over Georgia Southern earlier in the afternoon to extend their tournament run all the way into the if-necessary championship game of the double-elimination tournament. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The game time for Wednesday’s makeup game at Charleston Southern has been moved to 1:30 p.m. due to the threat of weather later in the day.   The game was moved to Wednesday, May 9 after being rained out back in March, and was originally scheduled for 3 p.m.   The Cougars will start right-hander Ryan West, while the Bucs will counter with RHP Kevin Buran.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Cougar slugger Daniel Aldrich knocked a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 11th, but Clemson’s Thomas Brittle landed a two-out hit that tied the game and the Tigers won on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning, 4-3. The College of Charleston (31-14) pitching staff delivered an outstanding performance, holding Clemson to just two runs and two hits until the 11th inning.
