New Hanover County, NC – New Hanover County’s trend in residential construction continues to strengthen this fiscal year with more than $90 million construction dollars spent. According to the latest construction activity report, issued by the New Hanover County Development Services Center, the largest project permitted in December was an $7.6 million multi-family apartment complex on Cedar Lane in Wilmington. The second largest project was a private aircraft hanger at 1859 Dolan Drive, at a cost of $1 million. Red Cross Responds After Tornadoes, Wildfires Leave Devastation Across The South

WASHINGTON, April 18, 2011 – The American Red Cross is working around the clock to provide relief to people affected by the deadly tornadoes and scorching wildfires that left a path of destruction in six states across the south over the weekend. Strong tornadoes ripped homes off their foundations, destroyed businesses and schools, overturned cars and buses, uprooted trees and downed power lines in Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi. In North Carolina alone, preliminary disaster assessments show almost 500 homes destroyed and more than 1,000 damaged. NC Supreme Court Declines to Hear Insurance Appeal

Per Dare County Manager Bobby Outten, the North Carolina Supreme Court has decided not to hear the appeal of the Court of Appeals decision regarding standing in insurance cases.  In April 2010, in a 3-0 decision,  the NC Court of Appeals dismissed one of the three cases pending before the NC Court of Appeals regarding the 2008 homeowners insurance rate increases. This decision refers to case 09-701 which was heard by the Court of Appeals on January 14, 2010 by judges Calabria, Geer and Stephens.
