Ninth-inning runs push Morehead City Marlins to victory over Asheboro Copperheads

ASHEBORO, NC July 22, 2014 – A two-run ninth inning broke a seven-all tie Wednesday between the Marlins and Copperheads, propelling Morehead City to a 9-7 win—their third straight win and sixth in the last seven games. Asheboro reliever Brandon Warren had two outs in the top half of the eighth inning when he surrendered a double to Dalton Britt. That brought Jacob Bruce to the dish, who topped a ball to deep short that was thrown wide to first from Connor Justice, giving the Marlins an 8-7 lead. They tacked on another run one batter later when Nick Lombardi smashed an RBI single of his own, making it a 9-7 game for closer Matt Tindall, who set down the […]

Kurt Lipscomb brilliant in Morehead City Marlins’ 6-1 win over Edenton Steamers

MOREHEAD CITY, NC July 20, 2014 – Right-hander Kurt Lipscomb turned it yet another quality outing for Morehead City on Saturday, this time going seven strong innings and helping the Marlins to a 6-1 win over the Edenton Steamers at Hicks Field. Lipscomb, making his fourth start for the Marlins, allowed just one run in his seven innings of work. It was the first earned run he has allowed in 25 innings pitched this season—good for a Marlins’ single season record for the lowest ERA in a season with a .36. He allowed seven hits but scattered them well, allowing multiple hits in an inning just twice. He walked only one batter on the night and struck out five. “He […]

Austin Bossart’s home run the difference maker in 7-5 win for the West

MOREHEAD CITY, NC July 15, 2014 – Austin Bossart may not have been able to win the Home Run Derby for the West on Sunday, but he did have the last laugh on Monday as his two-run home run in the seventh inning off Wilmington pitcher John Olczak gave the CPL West a 7-5 lead—the score by which they would eventually win. Rouric Bridgewater doubled to lead off that top half of the seventh inning, which brought up Bossart for his first at bat of the game. The catcher from the Asheboro Copperheads took Olcazk deep to left center with a towering drive that cleared the scoreboard at Big Rock Stadium. “I was just going up hacking really, just having […]

Alex Close slams six homers in final round to win CPL Home Run Derby

MOREHEAD CITY, NC July 13, 2014 – Peninsula Pilots catcher Alex Close blasted six home runs in the final round of the CPL Home Run Derby on Sunday at Big Rock Stadium, taking the victory in the contest over Asheboro’s Austin Bossart. Close needed only five home runs in his last at bat to win, and he was able to hit those five before even recording an out in the championship round. At the cheering request of the fans, he decided to stay out for a couple of more swings, and finished with six home runs. Close made it to the final round of the contest by clubbing 12 home runs in the first two rounds combined, which put him […]

Morehead City Marlins Gut Wilmington Sharks 8-2

WILMINGTON, NC July 12, 2014 – A five run seventh inning was the nail in the coffin on Saturday night at the Shark Tank, giving the Morehead City Marlins the 8-2 victory, and their first win in Wilmington in four tries. Morehead City continues to roll in the second half, improving to an impressive 8-2 since June 30th, and an not-so-impressive 13-24 overall. The Marlins would jump out to an early lead in the first inning, after starting pitcher Matthew Vogel would issue a walk to leadoff batter Andrew Amaro. He would move up on a Blake Graham single, and a sacrifice bunt. Marlins All-Star firstbaseman Johnny Caputo put one into the outfield to easily score Amaro. Wilmington would seek […]

MOREHEAD CITY, NC July 12, 2014 – A strong outing from left-hander Chris Good and a couple of clutch two out hits made the difference on Saturday as the Marlins improved to 8-2 in the second half with an 8-2 win over the Sharks in Wilmington. Chris Good battled through 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits in his fifth start of the season. It was a tremendous rebound start for Good, who entering the game had gone just 5.2 innings and allowed 13 runs on 18 hits. “He attacked early in the count,” said Marlins’ head coach Sam Carel. “One of the most important pitches he threw was to the first batter of the game. He got behind […]

Wilmington Sharks Beat Fayetteville SwampDogs in Walkoff Fashion

Wilmington Sharks Beat Fayetteville SwampDogs in Walkoff Fashion

WILMINGTON, NC July 11, 2014 – With the bases loaded and two outs, and a tie ballgame in the bottom of the twelfth inning, Nate Moorhouse walked into a situation that millions of children emulate in their backyard. What they don’t imitate, however, is taking a 2-2 fastball off the elbow to win the game – but that’s exactly how Fayetteville’s three game winning streak was brought to an end. The starting pitching between these two teams was phenomenal in the early goings. Faytteville’s Teddy Turner and Wilmington’s Beau Dees traded goose eggs though the first three innings, but it was the Sharks who would strike first. Steven Linkous was struck by a pitch to lead off the bottom of […]

Amaro reaches base nine times, helps Marlins to split in doubleheader

MOREHEAD CITY, NC July 11, 2014 – A ten-run outburst in game one of the Marlins’ twin bill against Wilmington Thursday was enough to help them to a big 10-4 victory over the Sharks before eventually splitting the doubleheader after an 11-6 loss in game two. Andrew Amaro set the table the entire day for Morehead City, reaching base in nine out of nine plate appearances on the night. In the early game he was 1-for-1 with an RBI, walk, run, two hit-by-pitches and stolen base. In the nightcap the Marlins’ left fielder was 2-for-2 with an RBI, run, two stolen bases and three walks. Barring any steals from Anthony Marks or Ryan Raslowsky, Amaro is in a tie for […]
