College Alumni Return to Teach Summer Course in Public Health   CHARLESTON, NC July 14, 2014 – The College of Charleston welcomed back two alumni on July 10, 2014 to teach a Summer II course titled Global Perspectives on Poverty, Inequality and Vulnerability. Honors College alumni Melissa Siegel ’03 and Stephanie Wheeler ’03 are co-teaching the class. Siegel, a former economics major, is an associate professor in the Netherlands at Maastricht University’s Graduate School of Governance and a senior researcher and the United Nations University where she heads the Migration Studies research group.  Wheeler, a former double major in biology and theatre, is an assistant professor of health policy and management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health. CHARLESTON, SC June 16, 2014 – The College of Charleston will offer an African American Studies major beginning in the Fall of 2014 The new major consists of 33 credit hours of interdisciplinary coursework. “ With this major in place, all College of Charleston students whether they are majors, minors, or non-majors will have a rich array of opportunities to study African American history and culture,” says College of Charleston Provost George Hynd. “The African American Studies major will allow us to make more intentional and coordinated use of the unique history, places, and resources available to us in Charleston.  It also allows us to uniquely contribute to other historic and culturally important institutions such as the College’s Avery Center.” […]

CofC Cougars Finish Fourth at Szambecki Team Race

CHARLESTON, SC March 24, 2014 – The No. 4-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team finished fourth at the 2014 Aaron Szambecki Team Race held over the weekend in Norfolk, Va. Hosted by Old Dominion, sailors were met with temperatures in the low 70s on shore with a sunny southwest wind.
