Oct. 11, 2012 – The East Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams are on the road this weekend at the 2012 NCAA Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 13, at E.P. `Tom’ Sawyer State Park hosted by the University of Louisville. The day’s competition kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s Red race. Michael Murray Named Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach

GREENVILLE, N.C. July 19, 2012 – Michael Murray has been named assistant men’s tennis coach at East Carolina University, announced head coach Shawn Heinchon on Thursday. Murray joins the Pirates after spending five years as the head boy’s and girl’s varsity tennis coach at Forsyth Country Day School in Winston-Salem. During his five years at Forsyth Country Day, Murray helped guide the Furies to four boys’ conference titles and two girls’ championships. NT Terry Williams Suspended From ECU Football Program

GREENVILLE, N.C. July 19, 2012 – East Carolina sophomore nose tackle Terry Williams has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities effective immediately following a drug-related arrest according to an announcement from head football coach Ruffin McNeill Thursday afternoon. The decision came hours after McNeill and ECU athletics officials were made aware of late Wednesday night charges of possession of marijuana and intent to sell released by the Simpson (N.C.) Police Department. Possession & intent to sell marijuana are serious drug addiction and offenses. Cummings And Milner Earn C-USA Scholar Athlete Awards

IRVING, Texas July 19, 2012 – East Carolina graduate Kimmy Cummings and rising junior Matt Milner have both been selected as the Conference USA Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year for their respective sports, according to an announcement Thursday by league commissioner Britton Banowsky. The C-USA honor is presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport. The award is based on academic achievement (grade-point average), athletic success and service. Scholar-athletes were selected from Conference USA’s 12 institutions and 20 sports (combining indoor and outdoor track field). July 18, 2012 – Former Hickory High School standout Jada Payne has completed a grant-in-aid agreement to attend East Carolina and join the women’s basketball program beginning with the 2012-13 campaign, according to an announcement Wednesday by head coach Heather Macy. GUANAJUATO, Mexico – While East Carolina junior All-America Tynita Butts has won a number of events on home soil the last several seasons, she can now add an international title to her repertoire as she captured the high jump gold medal at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U23 Championships held this weekend in Mexico. NACAC U23 Championships Results Butts and Canadian Michelle Theophille both cleared the bar at 1.82 meters, but Butts did it in less misses to claim the top spot on the podium. The other American representative, Boston University’s Allison Barwise, finished third with a mark of 1.74 meters. Pirates Ranked Among Top Swimming Teams In The Classroom

GREENVILLE, N.C. July 12, 2012 – The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) named the East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads Scholar All-America Teams for the 2012 spring semester this week. The ECU women compiled a 3.58 cumulative GPA during the reporting period for the award, ranking fourth in the nation among NCAA Division I programs behind Clemson (3.62), Alabama (3.62) and Northwestern (3.59). The Pirates had eleven of their student-athletes make the Chancellor’s List with a 4.00 GPA during the spring semester and an additional nine earning a spot on the Dean’s List with six more on the Honor Roll. July 13, 2012 – Former Pirate standout Ben Sanderson has been named assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, while also serving as the hitting and outfield instructor at East Carolina University according to an announcement from head baseball coach Billy Godwin Friday. Prior to his return to ECU, Sanderson served four years as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University working with the Owls’ hitters and outfielders, while playing an integral role in its recruiting efforts.
