Connor Shaw Named to O’Brien Watch List

Columbia, SC July 18, 2012 – University of South Carolina junior quarterback Connor Shaw is one of 34 candidates named to the 2012 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List announced today. Shaw, a 6-1, 207-pounder from Flowery Brach, Ga., has won eight of his nine career starts, while completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 1,671 yards with 15 touchdowns while tossing just eight interceptions. An excellent runner, Shaw has carried the ball 167 times for 690 yards with eight scores, including one 100-yard performance. Marcus Lattimore Named to Doak Walker Watch List

Columbia, SC July 19, 2012 – University of South Carolina junior running back Marcus Lattimore is one of 52 candidates on the Doak Walker Watch List, it was announced today. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back. Lattimore, a six-foot, 218-pounder from Duncan, S.C., is a preseason first-team All-SEC selection according to both the league’s coaches and the media. He previously was named to the Maxwell Watch List, which goes to the nation’s outstanding player. Columbia, SC July 19, 2012 – The University of South Carolina placed seven players on the 2012 preseason All-SEC squads, as selected by the media attending the annual Southeastern Conference Media Days, it was announced today. The Gamecocks were led by a pair of first-team selections in running back Marcus Lattimore and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Lattimore, a six-foot, 218-pound junior from Duncan, S.C., was the top vote-getter in the league, garnering 201 out of 222 votes. The 222 voters were the most in SEC Media Days history. Clowney, a 6-6, 256-pound sophomore from Rock Hill, S.C., received the most votes (140) among the defensive linemen. Ilona Burgrova and Iva Sliskovic to Participate in 2012 Olympic Games

COLUMBIA, S.C. July 17, 2012 – A pair of former South Carolina women’s basketball standouts will represent their countries in the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London. Ilona Burgrová, who played for the Gamecocks 2005-08, will represent the Czech Republic, while Iva Sliskovic, a 2004-07 letter winner, will be part of the team from Croatia. Both are making their Olympic debuts and join Shannon Johnson (2004, United States) as the only Gamecock women’s basketball alumnae to participate in an Olympic Games. Columbia, SC July 18, 2012 – University of South Carolina assistant athletics director – marketing, Eric Nichols, has been selected as the 2nd Vice President/Secretary of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), it was announced at the organization’s 21st annual convention. Nichols joined the University of South Carolina athletics department in June 2008. He oversees all aspects of athletics marketing and serves as the marketing liaison to the athletics ticket office, Web site and video production, as well as Gamecock Sports Properties, Barnes and Noble merchandising, university licensing and communications and Global Spectrum. BARCELONA July 15, 2012 – South Carolina’s rising sophomore Erika Rucker earned her second medal in three days after leading Team USA to gold in the 4×400-meter relay at the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships held at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain. Rucker ran the lead-off leg for the team with a split of 50.89 to pace the Americans to a nearly three-second victory time of 3:30.01. COLUMBIA, S.C. July 12, 2012 – For the fifth time in as many years, South Carolina led the way on the Southeastern Conference First-Year Academic Honor Roll. A total of 97 first-year student-athletes achieved a minimum 3.00 grade point average for 2011-12. The list includes 608 selections from across the league’s 12 schools for the 2011-12 academic year. Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letterwinner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nomination institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
