Opening Night of the Wilmington Symphony Features Mozart’s Classic for Flute and Harp

WILMINGTON, NC August 21, 2014 – Opening Night of Wilmington Symphony’s 2014-15 Masterworks Season, showcases Mozart’s delightfully lyrical Concerto for Flute and Harp, featuring Christina Brier (harp), and Mary Jo White (flute), and Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, “The Inextinguishable”, on Saturday, September 20th at 8:00 pm in Kenan Auditorium.  Tickets available by calling 910-962-3500. Conductor Steven Errante says, “We’re opening the season with the delightful Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp, written by the composer during his youthful Paris days. And for maximum contrast, ‘The Inextinguishable’ symphony of Carl Nielsen is a 45-minute struggle between darkness, light, and every emotion in between. In the triumphant ending, light prevails.”   A virtuosic harp performer and music educator, Christina Brier performs […]

A Pirate’s Exile: Bussing across the U.S.A.

San Diego, CA, July 27th, 2014-Crossing the country on a bus is something everyone should try to do more often. It’s a reasonably affordable way to actually see things. I rode the Greyhound from Wilmington, NC to Los Angeles, CA with a slight layover for Bonnaroo and a little Salem, VA vacation. You read about the festival previously and leaving the farm in Coffee County and the campsite was a pretty bittersweet moment for me. It was so much fun, you just wanted to go back and start over. Unfortunately, if you stick around after the music stops, it’s time to clean. I briefly considered trying to hitch a ride to LA or Denver from the festival but jumped into […]

Charlotte Eagles Defeat Wilmington Hammerheads 2-0

WILMINGTON, NC April 26, 2014 – The Charlotte Eagles defeated Wilmington Hammerheads FC 2-0 at Legion Stadium on Saturday night. Midfielders Wells Thompson and Drew Yates led the Eagles to victory with one goal each in the second half. Midfielder Daniel Lovitz had several shots on Eagles goalkeeper Brock Duckworth throughout the night, but none found the back of the net to give the Hammerheads the points they needed to find the overall victory that would continue their undefeated streak. The Hammerheads had a close opportunity on goal as halftime closed in off a header by Sammy Ochoa in the penalty area from a volley by Lovitz. The Eagles were given the chance to increase the score soon after with […]

Cody Arnoux: A knack with the game on the line.

Cody Arnoux: A knack with the game on the line.

WILMINGTON, NC Mar. 6, 2014 – I am glad the Hammerheads re-signed Cody Arnoux for the third straight year. I knew he was highly regarded, but he has a reputation as injured prone. Let’s hope this is the year he remains healthy because I would like to see him at his best in 2014. I saw glimpses or flashes, even though a nagging hamstring injury limited his participation in 2013. He still finished with four goals and one assist. More important, he produced in the clutch or at least by our definition of coming through with the game hanging in the balance. His goal in the 90th minute – four minutes after entering – lifted Wilmington to a 2-1 victory […]
